Art For Afghanistan
Traveling Postcards has a new and unique opportunity in Afghanistan. Through the assistance of Trust in Education we are funding an after school art program that provides 20-30 children a day with art class. In the small village of Qallah Loqman , in Northern Afghanistan, Trust in Education provides additional learning opportunities for boys and girls in math, reading and computer skills. Traveling Postcards is proud to support exposure to the creative arts as we see so much individual potential that is expressed through drawing, painting, and any type of hands on learning. In 1996 when the Taliban came to power they banned art and music in response to their ideology. For years while underground schools and clinics arose, so did secret literary circles and musicians risking their lives to play. Currently contemporary art is reemerging in Afghanistan and women are playing a large role in film making, painting and sculpture. Art is a powerful tool for healing and remembering lost memories. Art provides voice and visibility for everyone.
Traveling Postcards goal is to raise $5000 in order to fund the art classes for at least two years. All monies raised will go towards paying teacher’s salaries, school supplies and heating costs . We have recently received a gift of matching funds! For every dollar we raise, it will be matched for up to $2500. This generous offer came from Wendy West, founder of Healers West. We have currently raised $1000, enough for just one year. Please donate now to keep our art classes going for a long time to come!
